Expanding into Europe and beyond
Marketing strategy for European expansion
Europe is not a single market. It is a set of country markets with different languages, different buying conditions, different competitors, and different expectations about how a supplier should present itself. A plan that treats it as one region usually underperforms in every part of it.
Who this is for
- U.S. companies planning a first market outside North America
- Teams already selling into one European country and deciding where to go next
- International business teams that need marketing expertise alongside their commercial work
The decisions in front of you
Which country first
Sequencing matters more than coverage. The first country shapes references, language assets, and the credibility you carry into the next one.
What actually needs translating
Language requirements differ by country and by buyer. Deciding where English is acceptable and where it quietly costs you is a commercial decision, not a budget one.
How buying differs
Procurement practice, decision-making groups, evidence expectations, and sales cycle length vary between countries. The marketing approach has to follow.
Central or local control
How much is set centrally and how much is decided in-market determines both speed and consistency. It should be an explicit choice.
How KVD helps
Prioritise markets
We assess candidate country markets against your proposition and commercial goals, and recommend a sequence.
Adapt per market
We adjust positioning, proof, and channel approach to the conditions of each country rather than to a single regional plan.
Localize with consistency
We make content read as locally written while keeping the position consistent across markets.
Possible deliverables
What we produce depends on the scope we agree. These are examples of what an engagement can include, not a fixed package.
- A market prioritisation and sequencing recommendation
- Country-level positioning and message adaptation
- Guidance on language, content, and channel requirements per market
- A model for what stays central and what is decided locally
- Working material for your international business and marketing teams
How we work with your team
U.S. companies expanding internationally usually already have an international business or sales team. We bring the marketing side of that expansion: the positioning, adaptation, and content work that makes local commercial effort land.
Questions we are often asked
Can we treat Europe as one market?
Not in practice. Languages, buying conditions, competitors, and regulation differ by country. A shared position can hold across Europe, but the way it is expressed and proved has to be decided market by market.
Is English enough in Europe?
In some countries and some buyer groups it is workable; in others it limits reach and credibility. It is worth deciding deliberately per market rather than defaulting to English everywhere.
How do we choose the first country?
By looking at where your proposition is already relevant, where the competitive set is favourable, and where your team can realistically support buyers — not simply by market size.
Who does the local language work?
Localization goes beyond translation: wording, examples, and proof points are adapted for the market. We define what needs to change and work with native-language resources where required.
